Call it jazz calligraphy.

These paintings have their own rhythm and visual
vocabulary. They start with treated copper, complete with irregularities,
naturally occurring green patina and powdery turquoise stains.
Ancient and weathered, the metal makes a perfect vehicle for the
calligraphy. Flat enamel paint grounds the contrasting background.
The copper sheet is bent and shaped to create changing
vistas of shimmering figures as you move closer, to one side,
farther away … so give these sculptures enough space to
encourage viewing from every angle. Completely unique and impressive,
they command comment from everyone who notices them. And when
they’re up on your walls, you’ll find that everyone
does.
“I first put these calligraphic sequences
on stainless steel. Then I began using treated copper instead—it’s
less rigid and more evocative, poetic and abstract.”
