A riddle
wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

These deceptively artful pieces begin with photographs
of Wagner’s “metal paintings,” and find their
stride in the play of illusion and abstraction underlying her
“puzzle paintings.” The Polaroids capture detailed
sections of the metal sculptures, angled to reveal fragments of
light reflected off the copper calligraphy. Verona, burl, lapis
lazuli, malachite and animal skins are the inspirations for the
background “pinboards.”
Perhaps not quite Churchill’s progression
from riddle to enigma (he was describing Russia), but definitely
an invitation into a visual world with many more dimensions than
initially meet the eye. And unquestionably unlike anything else
you have on your walls right now.
“The
emphasis here is on trompe l'oeil, which I create by pinning familiar
forms against a textured wall. The illusion of actuality is reinforced
through small visual clues, such as shadows beneath the curled
paper or angled push pins.”
